Be prepared. When you are going to have a photo shoot underwater, you need to prepare for it because it is definitely different if you have a photo shoot on a studio because almost anything will be fix with makeup, but your face expressions underwater can’t be fixed by makeup nor any photo editing tool or software, especially if you have drowning facial expressions, that is a no, no. So what you can do is to prepare, take a enough rest, take a rest as much as you can so that you have full energy for the underwater shoot, be it you as the photographer or as the subject, though much more if you’re the subject because you need to focus on your relaxed facial expressions underwater if it’s going to be a full body underwater shoot.

Be comfortable. When you are the subject of the underwater maternity shoot then make sure that first you are comfortable with what you are wearing, therefore you need to wear light weight clothing materials so that you will be able to freely move underwater. Also, as a photographer, you need to be comfortable with working with your subject as well; you also need to take care of her since after all she is pregnant, and so you also need to make sure that she is comfortable with the poses that you are asking of her. Another thing that you can do as the photographer and the subject is that you need to let her practice the poses that you want her to do on land, to check if she will be comfortable with it, and then have her practice it a few times under water as well, so that in that way, the shoot will run as smoothly as possible, fast and efficient.
Safety should always be first. So, when you are having a maternity shoot underwater then you need to make sure that you are safe wherever you are. As a photographer, you need to know first if your subject knows how to swim or your crew because that is one of the main requirements for you to get the confidence level of the team and most especially the subject to have maternity underwater photo shoot.
So what you need to do, before anything else is to talk to your subject if it’s going to be a full body underwater shoot or it will just be the body that will be in the water and not including the head. In this case, you will also be prepared for the lights and other stuff to bring because if it’s just going to be the body that will be in the water, then that means that you will just be in shallow water. Now another thing about safety is that as much as possible if you will be having a full body for maternity underwater shoot then make sure that you are familiar in the area, though as much as possible, you can do it in a pool so that there will be no waves that the subject will bother to deal with, and so that the factors are controllable unlike in the open water, because again keep in mind that the subject is pregnant.
